Nipple Discharge

Discharge from nipples is a common symptom, often caused by women squeezing their nipples to see if fluid will come out.

Many women will have white, cream or multicoloured fluid come out of multiple ducts on their nipples if they squeeze them. This is normal duct fluid and is not a breast problem or a symptom to be worried about. You don’t need to squeeze your nipples to check for fluid.

Discharge from nipples can be a breast problem if it is spontaneous (leaks out by itself), one-sided, comes from one duct and is clear yellow or blood stained. But even with all these characteristics, most discharge from nipples will be benign (not a sign of breast cancer). However, it’s important you see a breast doctor for assessment to ensure there is no underlying breast problem.

Nipple Change

It is important to see your doctor if you notice one of your nipples inverting (turning inwards) or pointing to one side – or if you notice any persistent skin change on the tip of your nipple. It is important that a doctor assesses these symptoms.
